Urinary Incontinence Myths

Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence affects more than 25 million people in the United States, but incontinence is rarely discussed. We’d like to put an end to that. Below are 4 urinary incontinence myths along with non-invasive treatment options available from our Pelvic Floor Specialists at Western Berks Physical Therapy.

MYTH #1: INCONTINENCE IS THE SAME FOR EVERYONE

FACT: Incontinence affects every person differently. This is why an individual, comprehensive, treatment plan to eliminate symptoms and prevent further recurrence is essential.

MYTH #2: INCONTINENCE IS A NORMAL PART OF LIFE & AGING

FACT: Urinary incontinence might be a common problem, but it is not normal and it is not an inevitable part of life. Women and men of any age can be affected. The good news is that much can be done to alleviate symptoms or eliminate the problem entirely regardless of age.

MYTH #3: MY INSURANCE DOESN’T COVER THAT TYPE OF TREATMENT

FACT: In most cases, insurance covers physical therapy sessions, including pelvic floor physical therapy services. Depending on your specific plan, you may need to meet your deductible first and/or pay a copay or coinsurance amount at the time of your service.

MYTH #4: MEDICATIONS ARE THE BEST TREATMENT

FACT: Medications to treat overactive bladder or urge incontinence alone are not effective in the long run. Most people with overactive bladder do not require medication. Pelvic Floor Therapy has a proven track record of resolving urinary incontinence in men, women and children in as little as 4 weeks.
