  7. Stop at the first sign of pain. Any persistent pain lasting more than 48 hours should be addressed by a physical therapist or other medical professional. It is more effective to treat new and recent injuries rather than those lingering for a few months.

Is pain during pregnancy normal?

For many, the general response to pain during pregnancy is, “It’s just because you’re pregnant. It will go away after you give birth.” However, that’s not what research shows. Research has shown that for 80% of women, if pain or urinary incontinence hasn’t resolved itself 3 months postpartum, it’s not going to. A study published in BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology found, for example, that among women who reported having urinary incontinence at 3 months, 76.4% reported having it at 12 months postpartum. March 30th is National Doctor’s Day!

National Doctor’s Day was created to show appreciation to physicians for their leadership in the prevention and treatment of illness and injury. The first Doctor’s Day was celebrated on March 30, 1933, when the wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond set the day aside to honor physicians everywhere. This was the anniversary of the first time general anesthetic was used in surgery. In 1990, President George Bush officially declared March 30th as “National Doctor’s Day”.

Modalities vs. Manual Therapy

Some patients arrive at their first physical therapy appointment expecting to receive hot packs and instructions on how to complete a series of exercises. Electrical muscle stimulation, heat and ice are all considered modalities. A modality is a type of electrical, thermal or mechanical energy that causes physiological change to relieve pain. So what other treatments are available other than modalities?

This brings us to Manual physical therapy! Manual physical therapy is a specialized form of physical therapy delivered with the hands as opposed to a modality. In manual therapy, therapists use their hands to put pressure on muscle tissue and manipulate joints to decrease pain. Manual physical therapy is proven to restore mobility to stiff joints and reduce muscle tension in order to return you to more natural movement without pain. It can also provide effective relief for patients with chronic and acute back pain from soft tissue injuries such as a back muscle strain or a pulled ligament.


While all physical therapists have the option to use manual therapy in their practices, many therapists don’t spend the time or the resources to become proficient in this area of practice. Make sure to research physical therapy providers near you before making your decision on where to attend therapy! Remember that YOU have the choice of where you would like to go for therapy. When a physician provides a prescription for physical therapy, it can be “filled” wherever YOU want, not where the doctor tells you.  Some physicians with their own physical therapy office will tell their patients that they must use the doctor’s facility for rehabilitation.  That is simply not true!  In fact, it is unlawful to practice what is known as “self-referral”. 8 Tips For Safe Snow Shoveling

Here are some tips to keep yourself injury-free as you shovel today or during this wintery season

Each year, hospital emergency rooms see a spike in the number of people they see for injuries related to shoveling or removing ice and snow. The number of cases are in the thousands.


Western Berks Physical therapy doesn’t want you to let yourself become included in those numbers.


As you shovel snow from recent storms or those that may impact the region, here are some tips to keep yourself injury-free. (Tips from the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons):


  1. Warm-up. Shoveling can be a vigorous activity so warm-up your muscles for 10 minutes with light exercise before you start shoveling.
  2. Make sure you can see. Be sure that you can fully see the area that you are shoveling. Watch for ice patches and uneven surfaces.
  3. Dress appropriately. Wear light, layered, water-repellent clothing to provide both ventilation and insulation. Wear the appropriate head covering, warm socks and gloves or mittens. Avoid falls by wearing shoes or boots with slip-resistant soles.
  4. Start early. Clear snow early and often, especially if a large snowfall is expected.
  5. Pace yourself. Take frequent breaks and drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration.
  6. Proper lifting. Push the snow instead of lifting it. If you must lift the snow, do it properly. Squat with your legs apart, knees bent and back straight. Lift with your legs and do not bend at the waist.
  7. Safe technique. Do not throw the snow over your shoulder or to the side because it requires a twisting motion that stresses your back.
  8. Use the correct shovel. Use a shovel that is comfortable for both your height and strength. Do not use a shovel that is too heavy or too long for you. Space your hands on the tool grip.
